We are twin brothers, Callum and Cianan McGuffin, in our early twenties, boldly going where others have gone before! We’re from Salt Spring Island, British Columbia Canada, where we learned to sail with the Salt Spring Sailing Club, racing 420s. We then discovered the world of yacht racing and crewed on various boats around British Columbia. This led us to buy our own boat and do the Race to Alaska, at that time being the youngest crew to successfully complete the race.
We are now circumnavigating the globe starting in British Columbia through the South Pacific, around Australia and across the Indian Ocean to South Africa. From there we’ll head up the Atlantic to Canada’s East coast to attempt the Northwest passage through the Arctic Ocean, and return to Salt Spring Island. That’s the plan, anyway! We are on route to become one of the youngest crews to circumnavigate using this route.
We’re sharing this pursuit of our dream to include our community, friends and family with more information on our days at sea, in a more real-time, immediate way that we can do through our Youtube Videos and posts. There are plenty of challenges ahead and we hope you will join us on this exciting adventure!

Our Passion for Adventure and Exploration
Why do we do this?
We always want to push our own boundaries to see what we are capable of.
Growing up, our parents always chose lifestyle and experience over security. In our early years, we spent more time living in tents than in a house. Maybe this helped prepare us for long sea passages, always a little uncomfortable and exposed to the elements. We all spent lots of time hiking, canoeing, snowshoeing, skiing, swimming and generally mucking about outdoors.
We want to venture out and see what is out there in the world. Sailing has allowed us to get to places that are hard to access by land and give us a different perspective. Experiences like sailing up the coast of Namibia, along the north coast of Australia, into coral atolls in French Polynesia- seeing these remote areas and being able to anchor and explore them expanded our sense of wonder and appreciation for the world. And push us to see and do more.

Callum McGuffin
Official role on the boat: Skipper
- Work when not sailing: Sailmaker
- Interests other than sailing: Hiking, Fishing, Hunting
- Favourite food on land: Poutine
- Favourite boat meal: fresh caught tuna off St. Helena
- Top experience (so far); exploring the Diamond Coast of Namibia, anchoring with the sand dunes behind us and going ashore to climb through the dunes. It was only us, out in this desolate, beautiful landscape
- Worst experience (so far): On board on a long sea passage- the smell, food or lack of it, sleep deprivation, bad drinking water
- Best sailing fix/hack: repairing the float switch on our bilge pump with a tin can. We used a strip of tin to make a new electrical contact in the float switch.
- Favourite book to read on board: Sailing Alone Around the World by Joshua Slocum (read three times)

Cianan McGuffin

- Best sailing fix/hack: using custard mix to make a mold to cast new bushing for the windvane autopilot from epoxy
- Favourite book to read while sailing: All of the Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O’Brien (read five times)
